It's a Flaming Lips party. 12:30am Monday morning, and the kids are all joining me at my house for the virgin listening of the new Flaming Lips record...which, incidentally, doesn't come out until July. Honestly, I've listened to the first 4 songs, but no one else has heard any of it. So, we drink a few beers, smoke a few bowls, and crank up the Flaming Lips record all the way to, um...8. Maybe 9. Regardless, is it really neat or really retarded that me and my homiez make an event out of listening to a new CD?
I'm also listening to the new Queens of the Stone Age record. It's fucking great. I was rather indifferent towards QOTSA until I saw them at Coachella. I'd seen them before live and they were ok. Nothing ground breaking. But seeing them with Dave Grohl was a whole new experience. They were awesome. This new CD, which indeed features Dave Grohl on the skins, is really, really good. I'm totaly falling in love with it. So much so, that I already had my friend at Interscope mail me their last record, "Rated R," so I can relisten to it. I'm sure something about it will grab me this time around. It's funny being a late comer to a great band. QOTSA were getting all sorts of critical apraise a year and a half ago when "Rated R" came out, and I didn't care. And Now I'm totally digging them.
While I'm on this music theme (is there really any other?), I'll pay my respects to a great punk rock band which recently broke up. Zeke, one of the sickest, coked out, ultra fast, white trash punk rock bands in recent memory split up in the midst of their European tour. Naturally, they were scheduled to play here, with my boys FFI opening up. Not this time...
R.I.P. Zeke.
Sometimes I just want to sit down when I pee. Is that weird?

This damn thing has been out of print on vinyl forever. I finally found it...at a record store in England. $20 later and it's mine. Now if I could get my hands on the Time Whore/Something Vicious For Tomorrow LP.
I also got a CD from the Black Keys. Their bio describes them as "stripped down rock 'n' roll that combines Memphis grit, Motor City stomp, and Mississippi hollers." I'm thinking The Immortal Lee County Killers meets the White Stripes meets the John Spencer Blues Explosion...but we'll see. I havn't listened to it yet. I love how I'm just suddenly on all of these cool little record labels' mailing lists now. I keep getting cool shit sent to me.
The Flaming Lips guests have arrived. Time to rock.
