coachella 2003.
Tuesday, Apr. 29, 2003 - 6:50 pm Now Playing: The Dismemberment Plan "The Things That Matter" Weekend Recap: Friday, I stayed at work until 5 after a friend decided to buy me a ticket to Beastie Boys. So, my drive to Indio for Coachella would be delayed until after the Beasties played here in Vegas. Before the show, I met Darryl McDaniels (DMC from Run DMC), and during the show David Spade came to sit by some friends of mine. I ended up next to him in the elevator, and we shot the shit for a few minutes. He actually remembered me from last time he was here. So, I got to Indio about 3:30am on Saturday morning...just enough time to get into the roon and sleep. We were up and off to breakfast by 11am. After a butter/bagel fiasco at the local Winchell's, we made our way to the scenic polo fields of Indio California for Coachella. First up was South. Elijah Wood stood next to us as we rocked out. Idlewild was directly after South, and they were brilliant. It was my first time seeing them, and I was quite impressed. The sound in the Mojave Tent (where both bands played) was kind of shitty. I guess that wouod explain why sound guys from that tent were getting fired right and left that day. Next on the agenda was to catch some of N.E.R.D. from the V.I.P. area. N.E.R.D. kind of sucked, but hanging in V.I.P. was nice. The host guy from Access Hollywood made some small talk with me as we waited in line for drinks. I ran into an old friend from Northern Nevada who now works for XM Radio. He interviewed me and a few friends for his radio show. He even managed to squeeze in the name of my record label 2 or 3 times during the interview. Nice. We kicked it in the V.I.P. area until the Hives. While waiting, we saw Ethan Suplee (the fat guy who can't see the sailboat in Mallrats), who was hanging out with Juliette Lewis (more on her later). I saw the mean looking bitch who is in Fast and the Furious and Blue Crush running around wearing next to nothing. Danny Devito showed up on day 2 with like 7 kids who all looked like him, but had his wife's hair. I stood next to Thurston Moore for a minute, trying to get the nerve to say something to him. I didn't. So, on our way out to go watch the Hives, I mention to Daniel that Benny had seen Juliette Lewis (I hadn't seen her yet), and that I wanted to meet her so bad. Well, as luck would have it, she was leaving the V.I.P. area at the same time as Daniel and I were. She ended up standing next to us through all of the Hives set, and kept looking over at me and smiling while the band was playing. Daniel kept asking me if I was even going to talk to her. I was sooo nervous, but finally, after the Hives set, I tapped her on the shoulder and chatted with her for a few minutes. She was super nice to me, and actually seemed very down to Earth. I'll let the whole Scientology thing slide. I noticed she wans't wearing a wedding ring, and I foud out after I got home that she is not married anymore, or is in the process of getting a divorce. DAMN! I missed my window of opportunity. But, I did get to meet her, and I told her about my Natural Born Killers tattoo...which she thought was pretty cool. The Hives were a lot of fun...it was my first time seeing them, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. We hung in V.I.P. and listened to Blur, who were decent. I've never been a big fan though, so I wasn't expecting much. Queens of the Stone Age were awesome as always. We tried to catch some of Ladytron, but they were running late, and we got impatient, so we headed back to V.I.P. We caught the first half of the Beasties set, but it was identical to the set from the night before, so we ventured over to catch the Libertines, who were obvisouly not going to play because it was so late already. After walking all over the fields for an hour trying to find Benny and Satan, we finally called it an evening. Sunday was even better than Saturday. The Kinison started off our day, and those kids fucking kill. I agree with Andy when he says that they're going to be huge. Ben Folds was right after, and he was great as always. We heard some of the Soundtrack of Our lives set, and it was a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to getting the album. The Polyphonic Spree totally blew me away...they were the biggest surprise of the weekend. It's the remaining members of Tripping Daisy, with 2 dozen other members (featuring a full choir, horn players, a theremin player, a pan flute player, and more). They sound like an orchestral version of Flaming Lips. Very cool indeed. The Mars Volta were fucking amazing, as always. Daniel and I got as close to the front for them as possible, while Dre and Andy watched from the side of the stage. We caught the first half os Sonic Youth's set, before heading over to catch the rescheduled Libertines set. All I can say is "holy shit." The Libertines were fabulous. It was cool getting to see their first ever U.S. performance (Dre pointed out that every year at Coachella we get to see a band do their first ever U.S. performance...2 years ago it was Sigur Ros, last year it was the Vines, and this year the Libertines). After the Libertines, it was dinner time. We watched the White Stripes from V.I.P. They were really good, although I don't think Dre and Andy cared for them. Iggy and the Stooges were insane...what a treat to see those guys play their first show in like 30 years. The retard in front of us had a video camera and was taping their performance, but he wouldn't stop jumping up and down and shaking the camera, so I'm sure the footage turned out great. Moron. Finally, we closed out the night by heading over to see Interpol. Dre and Andy weren't too interested in seeing them because they're "too boring." I didn't mind. By that time at night I had a nice buzz going, the sun was down, and Interpol sounded perfect. They were incredible. They played my favorite songs from the album, and threw in a couple of new ones as well. It was a perfectly chill end to a perfect weekend. And, while Daniel and I didn't get any "Coachella gash," we all still had a fabulous time. I can't believe I have to wait another year to do it all again. "Tell me the truth now before I get mad. Was I the best lover you ever had? Give me it straight, does it keep you up an night? If you're such a victim, the go call the cops. It certainly looked good when you were on top. If I get the blame then I get the credit too."
